Texting While Driving

July 30th, 2009 § 1

This cartoon is for all the idiots who think they can multitask while driving and for the rest of us who think they are utter idiots for doing this and like to make fun of them.

An End Insight for the Strike?

July 27th, 2009 § 0

Reports today state that the City and the two main unions involved in the 5-week long municipal strike in Toronto have reached a basis for deal BUT not a signed agreement yet. While this strike is certainly a major irritant to me, I hope that the City has not “caved” and given them too much. Personally, I would be happier if all the garbage workers were fired and then an appropriate work force re-hired under terms more inline with current market norms for equivalent skillset and experience. Sorry, nothing overly challenging about picking up things and putting them in another thing. Can’t really equate with a policeman, paramedic or fireman as to qualifications.

Anyways, I haven’t been suffering too much on the garbage side. I am more concerned about the lack of city-run daycare and for those who can’t afford other solutions and have had to scramble to figure something out.

Keeping my fingers crossed that is resolved soon and with the taypayers interests in mind.

District 9

July 10th, 2009 § 0

Neil Blomkamp was supposed to direct the Halo movie. That project has been supposedly shelved for now. Neil has teamed up with Peter Jackson (LOTR fame) for District 9 which is a story about aliens landing and settling on earth with humans effectively organizing them into their own segragated communities with the objective of learning about their technology. Of course this has disastrous results.  Comes out August 14 and I think I wouldn’t mind checking it out.

Spit for Science

Jen’s major research project got some well-deserved media attention despite Michael Jackson’s televised tribute. Check out this article from the Canadian Press (via The Star). And here is a link to a video clip.

Both Owen and I are very proud of Jen and her team at Sick Kids Hospital who are doing great work to learn more about the genetics behind ADHD and OCD. Owen is so excited he even wears his pride on his shirt.

If you live in the GTA and have young children, consider a fun outing to the Ontario Science Centre and support science!! The collection period runs until August 31. You can learn more details here.

Incredible paper castle (small scale)

July 2nd, 2009 § 0

Came across this incredible paper art installation created by a Tokyo-based art student. I have seen a number of replicas but this just looks so gorgeous. You can read more about this paper castle here.

Happy Canada Day!

July 1st, 2009 § 0

Happy 142nd to the best country on the planet! As I blow out the candles I can only wish for Harper and the rest of the Conservatives to not be the government any more. Here’s a little Canada Day imagery (courtesy of Macleans). I somehow think that Zsuzsanna (his wife and who is not the woman in the picture) might be less than impressed with this particular pose!
